Indonesia Lokon volcano erupts.
Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano roared back into action over a week ago, spewing out a hail of rocks, steam and ash.Although they’re used to the permanent threat of the volcano, many residents say the new activity makes them nervous again.
Popocatepetl is an explosive volcano that can suddenly erupt at tremendous force, thrusting out rocks and ashes at large distances. That kind of volcano can be more dangerous than those releasing only flowing lava.
Locals said that most frightening was the unusual rumbling coming from the volcano, which many compared to an aircraft turbine.
“We’ve never heard a noise like it,” said Maximiliano Grajales.
About 4.5 million people live on the outskirts of the volcano, which lies at the crossroads of the states of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico.

Για ένα χρόνο πριν την 13η Νοεμβρίου 1985 η ηφαιστειακή και σεισμική δραστηριότητα του ηφαιστείου ανησυχούσε τους κατοίκους αλλά όχι τις αρχές του Armero.
The Colombian authorities have declared a red alert for the area around the volcano Nevado del Ruiz and warn the population against the feared mud flows (lahars) that are to be expected in an eruption of the volcano. The status of the volcano itself is described as eruption likely in the coming days or weeks. The reason is a steady increase in seismic activity and gas emissions from the summit crater. In recent days, more and more, usually small earthquakes have been occurring at shallow depths under the volcano, some of them felt. A steam and gas plume is rising from the crater to 1.5 km and sulfur smell can be noticed in nearby villages and towns. 430 000 inhabitants from the valleys of the Río Chinchina, Manizales and four other rivers have been warned of mud flows and possible floods, which could be triggered especially during heavy rains, even when there is no eruption.
